12 May - Grosseto to Follonica

Tuesday 12 May

Today we had a nice breakfast at our hotel in Grosseto then went to find the tourist info place. We found a helpful lady who explained that there is no tourist info office in Grosseto, but she was able to take us to an internet point where we did a bit of blogging. We quickly typed a bit and uploaded a few photos, but had to get back to check out of the hotel.
The hotel manager told us, in Italian, the best cycling route to Follonica, 44km away, which turned out to include our first Italian dedicated cycle path.

Our first Italian dedicated cycle path.

It was quite good while it lasted.

It was a beautiful ride via Marina del Grosseto and Castiglione della Pescaia, where we bought some food and had a picnic lunch.

Approaching Marina del Grosseto.

Shopping for our picnic lunch.

Riding out of Castiglione we encountered a very steep climb (which later map study suggests was avoidable).

The reward for our climb.

Tracey had to stop for a while to recover, which she did well enough to later overtake some local road cyclists!
On arrival at Follonica we found a campground right on the sea we views up and down the coast and straight out to the island of Elbe.

The beach.

Dipping a toe in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Our campsite.

The view towards Elba.
