Venice to Verona - 25 May

May 25

Left our campground at Mestre near Venice by train for Verona to rejoin our cycling route (the Via Claudia Augusta). The bike compartment was chockers with touring cycles hanging from the racks and standing on the floor. Seating was not plentiful and we had a minor run in with three Americans who had occupied eight seats for them and their bags, we managed to get two seats out of them and Pat sat in another carriage (while some girls sat on the floor), evidently unlike everyone else their baggage was just too heavy to put in the racks (breaks your heart). Pat the navigator insisted we detrain at a deserted railway station which his phone, running Tom Tom navigation software, indicated was the closest point to our campground. Tom Tom took us up lots of one way streets (the wrong way) but we got there in the end.

Our campground was the Castello San Pietro and as the name suggests was located within the walls of an anicent castle. Located on a hilltop overlooking Verona the views were spectacular (best yet). Lots of cycle tourists in evidence, mainly German (all going downhill). I hooked into a five hour hike around the city, it really is an amazing city with its Roman amphitheatre (huge Colloseum-like building) in the centre surrounded by a lovely piazza all located within the ancient city walls. We had a few drinks that evening in the piazza as the sun went down on the city walls. Back at camp after the now customary pasta (gluten free in my case) we were treated to a Rastfurian jazz trio, a memorable experience sitting on the terrace with hundred mile views and a jazz playing in the background.

Our very shady campsite,

The sundeck with panoramic views of the city - 20m from our tents.

The roman arena in the main piazza.

That balcony on the left - Romeo & Juliet?

Our campsite is up on that hill!

Part of the view from the campsite - Verona is really beautiful.
